Poster Three Process - Vanish

This is my process of my third poster for Design101 assignment one. Following the theme of a story board in 12 frames, i have illustrated my key word of 'vanish' through sketching with pen and paper. The story involves the protagonist of a ballerina about to take centre stage at a big auditorium. Her overwhelming fear and nerves takes her to the floor and her dreams have 'vanished'.

The three images below is the story boarding exercise I undertook during the virtual tutorial. I had originally planned by storyboard around a man and his dog out in the countryside in Scotland, however i found it difficult to create an insightful story. From this problem, i learnt to ideate further ideas to explore different ways which i could illustrate 'vanish'.

As a result of my unsatisfied storyboarding during the tutorial, below is further brainstorming relating to the 'vanish'. The second image below illustrates the story process behind 'world building' as well as building my three key moments.

The next step was to expand on the story board. My key three moments were broken up into the ballerina getting ready, preparing to go into stage and her fall. These sketches were done roughly in order to provide me with how i wanted each scene to look like. During this time, my little sister gave me a ballerina pen for inspiration and surprisingly i did find it to be useful when drawing the silhouette of the ballerina.

Below are my 12 frames that have all been done with pencil and paper. A challenge i encountered was the context, imagery and poses of a ballerina, this made it difficult to visually illustrate each scene. In order to help me gain a better understanding of a ballerina i researched and watched a couple videos. I discovered that the posture and pose of a ballerina is very distinct (Glamour, 2020).

In order to transfer my hand drawings onto computer i took advantage of the tiny printer we had at home, as i did not have access to much else due to being at home for online university. When uploading my drawings onto photoshop, I found that scanning was much more efficient than taking photos, as there would be no shadowing or pixilation.

I made sure to experiment with the layout of my 12 frames within the dimensions of40x40cm. I found that four frames across and three frames down worked best for my storyboard as i could visually split my three key moments. When importing my images onto photoshop, i found that they were very small compared in proportion the the space we had to occupy and they would also get pixilated when enlarged. Luckily enough Carla had also given us the option of 20x20cm as other students were also experiencing the same issue with the resources we had access too.

Below is my final story board which has been created by sketching then formatted together on photoshop. The first four rows of frames show the ballerina doing her makeup, hair, getting into her costume and putting her point shoes on illustrating the first key moment of her getting ready. The next row of frames illustrates the tension that is building for her solo performance, demonstrating the second key moment. Finally, the last row of frames is showing the escalation and speed of her dance as she then falls over and her dreams as a prima ballerina have 'vanished'. Tension has been created by composition, lines, texture and the different camera angles used.

Overall, I am very happy with the poster I have created with the limited resources given due to covid19. However, this did not restrict me from portraying story behind each frame as the design elements are have been the driving factors of story boarding.
