Design Sprints - DES200

The design sprint process is a method for designer to quickly prototype and test their ideas. The design sprint process consists of five key steps. We will repeat the design sprint for three different tasks including a UX/UI, a 3D modelling and a VR environment brief. Overall, the design sprint has allowed me to rapidly prototype and complete all three tasks in four weeks.

Design Sprint Process:

Step 0 (initial step): To understand the brief/ challenge through listing assumptions.

Step 1: The first step is to sketch and iterate.

Step 1.5: Identifying gaps of knowledge that follows step one.

Step 2: Sketch and iterate potential ideas

Step 3:Decide on the best solution by gaining stakeholder feedback.

Step 4: Rapidly prototype the final design

Step five: Test with five target users

Step 6: Reflect on learnings, successes and challenges within the project


Going into the assignment, i decided that my strategy was that i would tackle each task separately in three different weeks as i knew i would get confused and overwhelmed. This allowed me to focus on an individual goal each week which helped me to stay on track. I did this through allocating twenty hours per week for each task and by working effectively by attending lectures and making the most of the resources around me. During the first week of class, I made myself familiar with the design sprint alongside the UX/UI, 3D modeling and VR environment tasks by reading and talking to peers.


UX/UI Design Sprint

When going into the UX/UI design sprint challenge, I knew that the task would take me at least twenty hours to complete as I was still trying to understand the design sprint process. My strategy going into this task was simple, focus only on this task for the week and make sure the prototype is complete by the following week. This allowed me to work quickly and effectively. One of my priorities for this task was allocating time to watch a youtube series on Figma as I was new to the software; this was a success as I found prototyping my app was straightforward. Once I had completed this task, it gave me the confidence for the 3D modeling and VR environment tasks in the following weeks.


3D Modeling Design Sprint

My strategy going into the 3D modeling task was similar to the UX/UI design sprint, to complete the entire design sprint by the end of the week, allowing me to focus on the VR environment and polish everything up the last week. I was able to get up to step five (prototyping) by the end of Monday, which set me up for success for the rest of the week. I prioritised the entire Tuesday to learn and experiment with Rhino by watching youtube videos and attending the workshop. At first, modeling in Rhino felt impossible and disheartening, but I focused on the tools I had mastered, resulting in a successful end product.


VR Environment Design Sprint

I found the VR environment the most daunting task within the assignment as virtual reality was a completely new field I hadn't explored yet. Despite having zero knowledge of VR, I proceeded to fill out the design sprint, which was straightforward. Like the previous two tasks, I made sure to dedicate time to learn, educate and experiment with Rhino and Mozilla hubs. This allowed me to build and import/ export with the correct files. The VR environment has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and branch out to a new design area.
