VR Experiments Design Sprint

Emily Huang

This VR experiment brief is apart of an assignment for DES200. We have been tasked to reimagining your favourite childhood space in VR using the Mozilla Hubs platform. The environment should have a strong narrative that considers both spatial and acoustic qualities alongside visual communication. By implementing the design sprint, I have successfully created the Mc'Donalds playground as my favourite childhood space.

The process for the VR experiment brief followed the design sprint where we list assumptions to have an understanding of the brief, researched relevant precedents, identified gaps of knowledge, iterated potential solutions, decided on the best solution, rapidly prototyped, tested on five main stakeholders and lastly reflected on successes, learnings and difficulties I encountered throughout the task.

Successes:

  • I was able to prototype my VR environment at a steady pace as I have learnt the basic’s of Rhino from the UX/UI task.

  • Managing my time was a significant risk that I had planned to mitigate failure. I was able to successfully allocate twenty hours to this task while also being able to focus on other assignments and papers.

  • Having a fun and creative childhood i was able to come up with many iterations which I felt passionate about

Challenges:

  • A challenge that I faced was the constant push to complete the assignment on time which increased my stress levels however I was also to take control of this issue by taking 15 min breaks whenever they were needed.

  • Another challenge was having zero experience and knowledge of Mozilla Hubs going into this challenge which was daunting and scary. I was able to quickly learnt how to import, export and place objects into Mozilla Hubs through the Wednesday workshop, which made everything much easier.

Process Documentation

Step 0: identifying assumptions fo understand the challenge/ task

Step 1: research and analyse precedents related to the VR task

Step 1.5: identify gaps of knowledge to mitigate high/ medium/ low risks

Step 2: iterate potential ideas for the VR experience

Step 3:decide on the best solution

Step 4: rapidly prototype using Rhino and Mozilla Hubs

Step 5: gain target user feedback

Step 6: reflect on learnings

Statement of Intent

We were tasked to re-imagine our favourite hood childhood space in VR using the Mozilla Hubs Platform. By implementing the design sprint I was able to 3D model a playground and shoe cubby hole space to represent the Mc'Donalds playground. I chose this space because I would visit every week with my grandparents and brother; it allowed me to be playful and explorative. I quickly assembled the assets on Rhino as I had learned the basic tools from the 3D environment task, which allowed me to prototype and test with target users rapidly. The Mc'Donalds VR environment is driven by visual and spatial elements alongside the the acoustic of children playing.
